A Life-Changing Scheme:
The Maharashtra government launched the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana on 21st November 2013 at Nagpur, spearheaded by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, and Health Minister Suresh Shetty. RGJAY is a beacon of hope for those holding Yellow Ration Card, Orange Ration Card, Antyodaya card, or Annapurna card, offering them free access to medical care in 488 government empaneled hospitals for 971 types of diseases, surgeries, and therapies. The scheme covers expenses of up to Rs. 1,50,000 per year per family, with a special provision of Rs. 2,50,000 for renal transplant patients. Additionally, separate funds have been allocated for poor patients requiring dialysis.
A Hospital of Hope:
Among those whose lives have been transformed by this compassionate initiative is three-year-old Umaira Khan, hailing from Basti district, Uttar Pradesh. Unbeknownst to her parents, Umaira had been battling a congenital heart ailment since birth, leading them to make multiple rounds to local hospitals due to her deteriorating health. However, with the timely intervention of the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Umaira underwent a successful open-heart surgery on May 24, 2023, paving the path to a healthier future.
Similarly, seven-month-old Swaraj Akash Kale from Nasik was finding it hard to feed and remain well since birth. A relative brought hope to his family by informing them about the hospital in Kharghar that offers free treatment. On May 18, Swaraj underwent a complex open-heart surgery, and within a mere three days, he exhibited significant signs of improvement, transforming into an active and thriving baby.

The Triumph of Compassion:
The heartwarming joint venture between the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport and RGJAY underscores their commitment to ensuring every child receives the medical care they need, regardless of their economic background. Renowned cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has also extended his support to this noble cause, presenting the Gift of Life certificates to children who have undergone successful surgeries, endorsing the significance of this life-changing endeavor.
A Heart Bypass Surgery Patient's Testimonial:
Ghalib, a 64-year-old gentleman, narrates his experience of receiving free heart surgery at the Seven Hills Hospital, an RGJAY network hospital. Struggling with severe chest pain and difficulty walking, Ghalib was recommended for angiography. Having heard of the hospital's association with RGJAY, he discovered that the test would be entirely free, saving him around Rs. 30,000. Ghalib's journey to healing, however, involved overcoming minor challenges, such as ensuring the accuracy of his ration card details.
Ghalib's angiography revealed severe arterial blockages, necessitating bypass surgery. Admitted to the pre-operative general ward alongside seven other patients, he was eventually operated on and cared for in the ICU for 1.5 days before being transferred to post-operative care. Although the services were not luxurious, the hospital staff exhibited exceptional courtesy, and the facility maintained high hygiene standards.
A Journey to Recovery:
Post-surgery, Ghalib spent a week at the hospital and observed a steady recovery, allowing him to resume walking with ease. While the surgery and hospital stay were completely free, Ghalib had to bear the expenses of a few pre-existing medications and a post-operation belt, supported by his family. Throughout his journey, the medical team provided food and assistance, ensuring his comfort and well-being.
A Note of Caution:
Ghalib's experience serves as a reminder that one attendant is essential to stay with patients day and night during their hospital stay. In situations involving multiple surgeries for the same patient, the annual limit of Rs. 1,50,000 per family under RGJAY may be exhausted, necessitating additional financial arrangements.
A Network of Hope:
Besides heart bypass surgeries, numerous other life-changing surgeries are performed free of cost under the Rajiv Gandhi scheme across various network hospitals. To explore the full list of network hospitals, individuals are encouraged to visit the official website of the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana.
Conclusion:
The combined efforts of the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport and RGJAY exemplify the transformative power of compassion and collective action. Ghalib's story resonates with countless individuals who have found hope and healing through RGJAY's support and the dedicated medical team at network hospitals. Through these noble initiatives, hearts are healed, lives are empowered, and the dream of accessible and quality healthcare for all becomes a reality. The Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana stands as a testament to the government's commitment to providing essential healthcare to the less fortunate, embodying the true spirit of humanity.
