A Bold Step Towards a Healthier India: Free Screening for Everyone Over 30!

In a major push towards tackling the rising burden of lifestyle diseases, the Union Health Ministry of India has launched an intensified nationwide screening campaign for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This initiative aims to ensure early detection of chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and common cancers (oral, breast, and cervical) for every individual aged 30 and above. With a mission to achieve 100% screening coverage, this program could save millions of lives through timely intervention and preventive healthcare.

Why This Matters: The Silent Epidemic of NCDs in India

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of death globally, accounting for 74% of all fatalities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In India, the numbers are staggering:

61.8% of deaths in India in 2016 were due to NCDs (compared to 37.9% in 1990).
54.5 million cases of cardiovascular diseases were reported in 2016.
65 million people are estimated to have diabetes.
55 million cases of chronic respiratory diseases like COPD and asthma exist.
23.8 million Indians suffer from ischemic heart diseases.

These conditions do not strike overnight—they develop silently over years, often unnoticed until it’s too late. The biggest culprits? Unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, and alcohol consumption.

How the Screening Works: A Door-to-Door Mission

The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) is on a mission to screen 50 crore people by March 31, 2025.

Who Will Conduct the Screenings?

Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs)
Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery (ANMs)
Frontline healthcare workers

How Will It Happen?

Door-to-door screenings will be conducted in both urban and rural areas.
Health centers and mobile medical units will be equipped with essential diagnostic tools.
Blood pressure monitors, glucometers, and medications will be made available to ensure smooth screenings.

What Will Be Screened?

✔ Diabetes – Blood sugar levels
✔ Hypertension – Blood pressure levels
✔ Oral Cancer – Physical examination
✔ Breast Cancer – Clinical breast exams
✔ Cervical Cancer – Pap smear tests

Why Early Detection is a Game-Changer?

Diabetes & hypertension can be controlled before they cause heart attacks, strokes, or kidney failure.
Cancer, when detected early, is more treatable and survival rates increase significantly.
Lifestyle modifications & timely medical intervention can prevent life-threatening complications.
Government’s Commitment to Better Healthcare
The central and state governments have been instructed to stock up essential medicines at primary healthcare centers. This ensures that people not only get diagnosed but also receive immediate treatment.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that this initiative is a crucial step toward a healthier India, preventing the catastrophic impact of undiagnosed lifestyle diseases.

We are committed to ensuring affordable, accessible, and timely healthcare for all. Early detection will reduce the financial burden on families, prevent complications, and improve overall life expectancy,” he said.
