AIIMS Jhajjar, a pioneering institution in cancer care, is set to inaugurate a cutting-edge nuclear medicine therapy ward. This facility, boasting 21 beds, is poised to become one of India's largest centers for radioisotope therapies. These therapies utilize radioactive substances to target and eliminate cancer cells with remarkable precision, while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissues. This approach is particularly effective for various types of cancers, including those affecting the thyroid, prostate, neuroendocrine system, bile duct, liver, bone metastases, and neuroblastoma.

The NCI's nuclear medicine therapy ward stands out as a beacon of hope for underprivileged patients, offering them access to life-saving treatments at a fraction of the cost. While similar therapies are available in the private sector, they often come with a hefty price tag. At NCI, the cost is expected to be significantly lower, ensuring that more patients can benefit from these advanced treatments.

Administering radioisotope therapy intravenously requires a specialized infrastructure and adherence to stringent safety protocols. Dr. Abhinav Singhal, Associate Professor in the Nuclear Medicine department, highlights the complexities involved in establishing such a facility, including meeting rigorous safety standards and obtaining regulatory approvals from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.

The launch of the nuclear medicine therapy ward at NCI marks a significant milestone in India's efforts to enhance cancer care. NCI, the second campus of AIIMS Delhi located in Jhajjar, Haryana, is one of the largest public-funded healthcare projects in the country. It focuses on translational research and addresses the unique challenges posed by Indian cancers, such as those affecting the oral cavity, gall bladder, and cervix.

NCI boasts a range of world-class facilities, including a cutting-edge research center, a fully automated core lab, and a public sector proton facility – the first of its kind in India. The institute is equipped with advanced medical equipment, including 25 modular operation theaters, 4 PET scanners, 2 MRI scanners, 5 linear accelerators, and more. It also houses a bio-bank for tissue samples and collaborates with national and international organizations for research and development in cancer treatment.

The introduction of the nuclear medicine therapy ward at NCI underscores India's commitment to providing affordable and innovative healthcare solutions. It represents a significant step forward in the fight against cancer and offers hope to countless patients in need of treatment.
